Revolving Doors responds to Sentencing Bill Royal Assent

The Government’s Sentencing Bill has received Royal Assent. Pavan Dhaliwal, Chief Executive of national justice charity Revolving Doors, said:

“Royal Assent should mark a turning point, not just a procedural milestone.

We welcome the presumption against short sentences, which have to date been a hugely costly policy failure. If ministers are serious about reducing reoffending for the small cohort of people cycling in and out of the system due to poverty, addictions, trauma and mental ill health, they need to focus on what we know actually works; namely, early diversion, treatment and support.

That’s where real public safety is built and what really breaks the cycle of crisis and crime.”

NOTE: Revolving Doors’ research demonstrates that evidence-led community alternatives are the most impactful way to tackle the root causes of reoffending and create safer communities. Find out more in Preventing the Revolving Door.
