Peer support on the Sussex Changing Futures programme

This report presents the findings from a research project that sought to explore the difference that having peer workers has made as part of the Changing Futures Sussex programme.

The research found that peer workers are a key part of multidisciplinary teams supporting clients because of the trust they establish and the flexible way that they can work with people.

These trusting relationships enable clients to better engage with the Changing Futures programme and wider services, and help people with multiple interacting needs to make positive progress with their lives.

Key to the success of the roles was:

  • A team leader or more senior member of staff to provide dedicated line management and guidance,
  • Small caseloads,
  • Having support in place for peer workers’ wellbeing.
