“We must not delay necessary action” Revolving Doors responds to doubling of short sentence recalls

Figures in the Prison Reform Trust’s latest Bromley Briefing reveal a drastic increase in recalls, with over 15,000 recalls from short sentences in the year ending last September – more than double the number of incidents than the previous year.

Revolving Doors Chief Executive Pavan Dhaliwal says:

“These staggering short sentence recall figures are a damning indictment of a chaotic and failing system. Imprisoning people for short periods of time and then sending them back to prison for reasons which rarely involve further offending is not just unproductive but desperately expensive, with a cost of over a billion pounds last year alone.

“Considering the continued pressure on prisons and probation, now is the time for action. The Sentencing Review is an opportunity for meaningful change, but we must not delay necessary action: the abolition of short sentences and a major long-term expansion of funding for the community-based options which evidence shows have the best chance at ending the cycle of crisis and crime.”
