“A critical juncture in our journey towards a better justice system” Revolving Doors responds to MoJ’s 10-year prison capacity strategy
The Ministry of Justice has released its 10-year prison capacity strategy, dedicating £2.3billion to prison builds over the next two years, with a target to open up 14,000 places by 2031.
In response, Revolving Doors Chief Executive Pavan Dhaliwal said:
“We stand at a critical juncture in our journey towards a better justice system. We cannot simply build our way out of this crisis – increasing prison capacity and improving the condition of the estate is necessary but must come hand-in-hand with the commitment to exploring alternatives to custody which the Government is examining via its Sentencing Review.
Now is the time for the introduction of a presumption against short sentences, and the development of robust and rehabilitation-focused community sentences. This would be an obvious and cost-effective first step to alleviate the burden on our prison estate, helping to end the revolving door of people cycling in and out of prison and replace it with a forward-thinking and resilient justice system.”
